The telecom sector in India has seen rapid growth in the past decade. Today, India is the second largest telecommunications market in the world. The industry has the potential to generate about 4.1 million additional jobs by 2020 not just in telecom but in allied areas such as Cloud, fintech, IoT, analytics, consumer electronics, telecom software etc. It’s no surprise then that this industry offers numerous opportunities and scope for every skilled professional. 

What it involves

MBA in Telecom Management is an amalgamation of management theories and technological know-how. Various institutes across the country have started offering an MBA in Telecom Management. This programme is designed to give students an understanding of various telecom technologies with functional knowledge required for various roles in this industry, such as business, marketing, regulations, information systems and finance. As a niche degree, this course also touches upon concepts specific to the telecom industry.

This MBA, in its two-year tenure, will expose students to courses such as networking, telecom & wireless technologies, telecom network management, network and cyber security etc. 

This course also imparts knowledge of the latest technology that is in use today. This interdisciplinary course prepares students to be industry-ready professionals, who can effectively manage the diverse and ever-changing requirements of the dynamic industry.

Career options

Due to the growth in both volume and diversity, the telecom industry is offering attractive career opportunities. Freshers and experienced professionals alike can succeed in this industry if they are motivated enough. Telecom management students can work in areas such as cellular industry, fibre optics communication systems, sales and distribution, product development and management, marketing and operations, network planning, telecom consulting, and telecom regulation among others. 

There are other ICT domains where they can find job opportunities, for e.g. business analyst, data analytics, market research, supply chain/ logistics, network and information security management, etc. 

There is a lot of demand for specific industry knowledge for consulting firms. All big consulting firms are also regular recruiters at  business schools. 

Graduates with a degree in telecom management are also making careers in the upcoming technological and communication sectors like the Internet of Things, digital marketing, and artificial intelligence.

Pay packages

The global nature of telecom technologies makes it common across different countries and the professionals can get an opportunity of international recruitment. For freshers, the pay package can reach up to Rs 9 lakh per annum. However, for those with previous work experience, the salary can also go up to Rs 10 lakh per annum. The highest package can go up to Rs 20 lakh per annum.

All in all, an MBA in Telecom Management is a good option for those who are interested in gaining advanced technical knowledge of applied telecommunications/ computer science/ information technology/ science that is integrated with business management knowledge. 

With the boom in this ICT industry, there are multiple opportunities across various upcoming fields for graduates with a degree in telecom management.
