For those getting foxed with the title of this book — Globotics actually comes from globalisation and robotics. And in Globotics Upheaval Richard Baldwin puts the spotlight on one of the major concerns of 21st century — future of jobs and economy in the face of a tectonic shift brought about in the workspace by technologies like AI, robotics, automation and others.

Baldwin, a leading globalisation expert, builds his argument on the fact that globotics is set to disrupt the lives of skilled workers all across the work in a major way as technology will enable people from around the world to be a virtual presence in any office at any time. In a marked difference from the industrial revolution, globotic revolution will affect white collar jobs — something that can  trigger major disruptions on economic as well as social levels, hence the upheaval.  Robots taking over jobs, telepresence, translation softwares, machine learning etc are soon going to make a number of service-related jobs redundant, something that can have a  dangerous impact.

How the governments, organisations and individuals, react to this imminent disruption, is what will decide the future of jobs, maintains Bladwin. Preparing for new jobs is the key here. Bladwin advises workers to look for jobs that “globots can’t do”.

The book presents a well-argumented case while preparing each one of us for “the oncoming wave of the advanced robotic workforce.” — TNS
