Q.I would like to do my master’s abroad so can you please enlighten me about career prospects in environmental science in the US or Canada? I want to settlethere. — Sarthak Agnihotri

A. In the West, environmental scientists are very highly paid and enjoy tremendous career prospects. The scope varies from teaching, consulting and research, to environment impact assessment for industries planning to set up new projects, environmental law, to social work and activism to environment protection and conservation.

Since courses in environmental science are generally offered at the master’s level, a bachelor’s degree in any discipline of science is an essential pre-requisite. Incidentally, we have several specialised courses in environment science in India as well, and vacancies requiring such specialists are growing as awareness builds up in the government as well as corporate and NGO sector.

Exemption for olympiad winners

Q.Our son is currently preparing for his Class XII Board exams. He is very fond of maths and has also participated in the maths Olympiad. Would it be a good idea to send him to ISI for further studies? — Kokila Anand

A. Yes indeed. Headquartered in Kolkata, the Indian Statistical Institute (ISI) is an institution of national excellence for research in teaching and application of statistics, natural sciences and social sciences.

For admission to BStat
(Hons) at Kolkata
BMath (Hons) at Bengaluru, online application begins:  February 5, 2019
ISI Admission Test 2019 will be held on: May 12, 2019

The good news is that Indian National Mathematical Olympiad (INMO) awardees like your son need not take the written test. He would be directly called for interview but do make sure that he applies in the prescribed application form like all other candidates.
