Nawanshahr women voters have outnumbered men voters in the Lok Sabha elections held here on Sunday.

As many as 69.96 per cent women cast their votes while 63.63 per cent men exercised their right to franchise.

The polling percentage of transgenders remained at 83.33 in Nawanshahr district, whereas Banga and Balachaur reported 100 per cent and Nawanshahr city reported 86.67 per cent polling.

District administration officials said it was a good sign that women were becoming more aware and coming out in a large number to cast their votes.

They said now, it was becoming a trend that transgenders did not shy away from coming out and exercise their right to franchise.

Nawanshahr witnessed overall polling percentage of 66.71 during the LS elections conducted at 592 booths of the district. In Nawanshahr, 66.66 per cent voters cast their votes; Banga recorded 65.75 per cent polling and Balachaur 67.73 per cent. The district has noticed much less polling percentage this time.

In the previous Lok Sabha elections, Banga had witnessed 71.64 per cent polling, while in Nawanshahr and Balachaur, 73.23 and 69.96 per cent of votes, respectively, were cast.

Appreciating the services rendered by assistant returning officers-cum-SDMs of all three constituencies, besides 2,368 members of 592 polling parties, the Deputy Commissioner had congratulated the entire staff for completion of the whole process smoothly and uninterruptedly.

There were 1,554 police personnel, led by three SPs and six DSPs, to monitor the whole security arrangements. Besides, the 169 sensitive and hypersensitive polling booths were given special attention by the administration and the police to avert any untoward incident.
