Wipe out drug menace from state, DC tells students

Deputy Commissioner (DC) Varinder Kumar Sharma today led hundreds of volunteers to take solemn pledge for further wiping out the curse of drugs from the district.

At a function held at DAV Institute of Engineering and Technology (DAVIET) today to mark the martyrdom day of Shaheed Bhagat Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev, the DC administered the oath to volunteers from various educational institutes to wipe out the drug menace.

In his address, the DC unequivocally said the drug menace was the biggest hurdle in realising the dream of our forefathers who had fought relentlessly for emancipating the country from the yoke of British imperialism.

He said the time had come when the war against drugs was further transformed into a mass movement to ensure that the state in general and Jalandhar in particular, was made drug free.

Sharma exhorted all volunteers to work zealously for achieving the target, which was a humble but befitting tribute to our youth icons, including Shaheed Bhagat Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev. Students of Government Senior Secondary School, Gakhal, presented a Nukkad Natak highlighting ill-effects of drugs.

The Deputy Commissioner called upon the youth to must exercise their right to franchise for cherishing aspirations of legendary martyrs Shaheed Bhagat Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev.

Addressing the gathering before flagging off a voters’ awareness cycle rally to commemorate the Martyrdom Day of Shaheed Bhagat Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev from Sri Devi Sahai Senior Secondary School today under Systematic Voters’ Education and Electoral Participation (SVEEP), the DC said: “The hard- earned right of vote must not be wasted and youngsters must exercise it judiciously to strengthen democracy at the grass roots level.

He said: “Those youngsters who are eligible but have not enrolled themselve as voters can apply for the same till April 19 before the polls.

Bhagat Singh remembered at maternal village

Garhshankar (Hoshiarpur): Shaheed Bhagat Singh’s martyrdom day was observed at Moranwali village, the paternal village of Shaheed Bhagat Singh’s mother Vidyavati. A commemorative programme was organised jointly by village panchayat, NRIs and villagers at ‘Mata Vidyawati Memorial’ built on the outskirts of the village.

The bhog of Akhand Path was performed and kirtani jatha recited shabds. State Congress General Secretary and former MLA, Garhshankar, Love Kumar Goldi graced the occasion as the chief guests. He offered floral tributes to Bhagat Singh and Mata Vidyawati.

Addressing the gathering, Goldy said: “Bhagat Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev’s martyrdom is a lighthouse that will keeping guiding the generations to contribute for the nation and not to step back from serving the nation even if we have to sacrifice our lives for it.”

Sarpanch Manjeet Ram; NRI Jasvir Singh Gholi from USA and other villagers too presented floral tributes to Shaheed Bhagat Singh and his mother Vidyavati.

Jathedar Tarsem Singh performed kirtan. Various speakers inspired the youth to take inspiration from Bhagat Singh and motivated them to follow his path.
