Students of the Apeejay College of Fine Arts have put up a Diwali Mela at the Satya Paul art gallery at Virsa Vihar here. Wares made by students of Fashion Designing and Fine Arts have been displayed at the art gallery.

While the unique initiative is a regular feature of the students of the college before Diwali, the exhibition is witnessing self-made, hand-crafted furniture, furnishings, lamps, candles, tea lights, hand bags, dresses, stoles, clocks, gift packaging and boxes.

While the college has been following the tradition for the past many years, many students of the college have opted for entrepreneurship after they formally started holding exhibitions.

The creations of fashion designing students have also been so loved that they have formally started receiving offers to design wedding dresses at big fat Jalandhar weddings. At today’s exhibition, collectively 30 to 50 college students put up the things created by them.

Sculptures and relief portraits from the sculpting department of the college and paintings made by them have also been put on display during the mela.

Divmol (21), Sapna (21) and Karan (21), all BFA fourth year students, who especially made wood, paper and mixed media lamps for the exhibition, said, “It is an amazing opportunity for us to step out of the comfort zone, inside the college, and interact with the world. This way, we will bag clients and also achieve confidence in selling our own things. It is a wonderful opportunity. It will go a long way for us in building our careers as well.”

Arupriya, Assistant Professor, Fashion Designing Department of the College, said, “Our students are doing a lot of beautiful work and their creations are on par with the best in the market. All furniture, hand-crafted material, candles and clothes displayed at the exhibition have been created by students on their own.”

Heena, Assistant Professor, Fashion Designing Department of the College, said, “Many students have already delved into entrepreneurship and many more are expected to venture out. We are hopeful that such opportunities would help students create a launch pad for them.”
