A Hoshiarpur-based Lambra Kangri Multipurpose Cooperative Service Society with the help of which people of the villages have shunned the ‘costly’ liquified petroleum gas (LPG) gas cylinders and are using biogas instead, has been awarded with Dr Shirin Gadhia Sustainability award by Eco Center ICNEER (International centre for networking ecology, education Re-Integration) in association with Muni Sewa Ashram.
The award has been given for the promotion of biogas through their piped biogas plant for the community which has become a model for the others to learn from and follow.
Making food for the family is now an inexpensive task for the residents of Lambra village of the district. People here are using biogas for cooking, on a large-scale and on collective-basis. The project manager of society Jaswinder Singh said he had given a presentation regarding this in the Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation on February 22.
“After I gave the presentation, the delegates from the ministry along with the members of Muni Sewa ashram came and analysed the project after which I received a confirmation as well as an award,” he said.
The Lambra Kangri Multipurpose Cooperative Service Society was established in 1920 by the forefathers of Jaswinder Singh, the project manager of the society. The society, since then, has been working for the welfare of the people in this area.
The first installment of 36 connections has already been provided and is running successfully since then.
The biogas meters as well as chullahs are provided to the members of the society on its own expenses.
While the price of the gas cylinders is between Rs 800-850, the villagers here get a bill ranging from Rs 150 to 200 per month.
The society is also providing biogas to Government Senior Secondary School, Lambra, to prepare the mid-day meal for students.
