Jalandhar, June 6

A clash between Sikh activists and Shiv Sena on the occasion of Operation Blue Star anniversary got averted after tension between two groups began in the Basti Adda area here this afternoon.

Prior to the confrontation, Shiv Sena leaders, including Rohit Joshi, had reportedly paid homage to former PM Indira Gandhi, General Vaidya and former CM Beant Singh and burnt the ‘Referendum 2020’ posters. Having got a false information that the Shiv Sena had burnt the effigy of Jarnail Singh Bhindranwala, Sikh leaders, including Harpal Chadha and Tajinder Pardesi, reached the office of Joshi. As the arguments between either side started, police personnel reached in large numbers. When talks were on, a Sikh activist clad in white turban allegedly slapped the Hindu leader in police presence. But police personnel from the Police Station Division 2 managed to control the flared up sentiments and managed to placate either sides. — TNS
