Jalandhar, December 8

In a circular to school principals, the State Council of Educational Research and Training, Punjab, has said to improve communication skills of students from Classes VI to XII, practice sheets and testing tools will be sent.

These sheets will contain writing, speaking, reading and listening exercises. For the listening exercise, audio clips are available on the website and teachers have been asked to make sure that they listen to these audio clips and then answer the questions based on it on the practice sheets.

The Education Department, earlier, had issued a circular to principals, asking them to make sure that students should speak English fluently.

The circular had read, “It is reiterated that English speaking can help increase enrolment in government schools.”

The department letter further read that during the recent meetings with school heads, teachers and other stakeholders, including the parents, a need was felt that the learning level of the students needs to be improved substantially.

“For the purpose, the department has organised specific training programmes. During these meetings and sessions, other suggestions particularly on spoken English were accorded. Morning assemblies may be used as an occasion for the students to speak English. They should be asked to prepare one or two-minute speech on any topic which will make the students comfortable in speaking English,” said the circular.

The department has already identified the commonly-used sentences to help the school heads and students. These sentences may be used to make the students familiar with the language.
