With a view to empowering people with spinal injuries, a rehabilitation centre named ‘Udaan’ was inaugurated at the NHS Hospital here on Saturday.

Dr Naveen Chitkara of NHS Hospital said, “In order to give better life to those suffering from paraplegia or are wheelchair-bound, the rehab has been opened so that both treatment and care could be given to those who had left hope from their lives and are unable to live a normal life.”

He said, “I have seen cases where people had met with road accidents, following which they remained bedridden for years. And it was only after they got themselves rehabilitated, they moved on with life with a different perspective.”

“Last year, a conference ‘Vistaar’ was held in Jalandhar, which saw the presence of nearly 200 persons with spine injuries from across the country. Now our aim to come up with this rehabilitation centre is to help paraplegics lead a better life and create a small community and move on in their life with positivity and different thinking,” he added.

Parvinder Sonu, president, Spinal Cord Injury Association, said, “My organisation works in identifying such patients and we reach out to them. The work involves motivating the injured and helping their families to deal with the loss with regular meetings. The organisation also helps budding sportspersons for Paralympic sports by helping them get admission into suitable institutes.”

IGP Arpit Shukla, Shruti Shukla and ACP Deepika Singh were also present on the occasion. They lauded the efforts of the NHS Hospital for coming up with rehab center for patients with spinal injury.
