Jalandhar, March 23

The district administration has initiated a special drive to curb illegal mining across the district, especially along the banks of Sutlej river in Phillaur, Nakodar and Shahkot sub-divisions.

After presiding over a meeting of civil and police officials regarding this, Deputy Commissioner Jalandhar, Varinder Kumar Sharma, ordered the officials, along with mining officials from the Industry Department, to make surprise checks at various places across the district.

The DC said two cases had been registered FIR No. 50 SPL 1 against Jaswant Singh of Baduwal village at the Dharamkot (Moga) police station and FIR No. 51 SPL 2 against Gurbax Singh of Pipli village at the Lohian (Jalandhar) police station.

These cases were registered under Section 20/21 of the Mining Mineral Act and tractor and trailers were bound down last night.

It may be mentioned here that the surprise checks were made at Nakodar, Shahkot and Phillaur by teams comprising SDMs, DSPs and mining officers concerned.

He has also said that ADC (G) Gurmeet Singh has been appointed as nodal officer to whom the teams at the sub-division level will report at every week.

He also made it clear that “he will personally monitor the anti-sand mafia campaign and there will be zero tolerance policy against the illegal mining”.
