The city is witnessing an interesting trend where school-going girls can be seen learning self-defence alongside their boy counterparts. A number of girls from the city, rather than opting for any dance or singing classes have enrolled themselves for self-defence classes in various summer camps.

Trainers say that the popularity of self defence classes has risen this year among girls in the district. In fact girls are more forth coming than boys. Abhilakshaya Khanna, the karate coach of a private institute said basically they had organised two camps for both the boys and girls, but surprisingly girls of different age groups had registered more in number as compared to boys.

In addition he said, girls were more keen to learn self-defence and combat techniques. The trainers said they were receiving several calls from girls on daily basis who enquire about the self defence camps.

However, somewhere few parents are reluctant to send their daughters for the karate camps as they fear it would cause harm and injuries to their bodies. A karate institute coach Vishal also said teenage girls were taking admissions for the karate and fitness classes frequently.

Jaspreet Kaur (13), who is learning self defence techniques at Cobra Karate summer camp said, she had joined the camp on the insistence of her mother, but after the interaction with the coach and the fellow learners she found the camp quite useful and was hopeful to learn enough techniques so that she can protect herself whenever needed.
