Harried residents who visit the local driving centre have urged the state government to facilitate the online payment for paying driving licence fees and for its renewal, keeping in view the abysmal facilities available.

Taking up the matter on behalf of locals, Sanjay Sehgal, an office-bearer of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) RTI cell, claimed that people had to stand in long queues and that too under a blazing sun in the summers for the purpose. He urged the Secretary (Transport) and the DTO, through the Deputy Commissioner (DC), to simplify the process of making the payment which, in turn, would provide the much-needed respite to the applicants.

He added that arrangements should also be made to ensure that people could deposit the fees through credit cards and also through net banking facilities of both nationalised and private banks.

Sehgal also urged that the facility of getting a learner’s licence should be made online. “This will save people from the hassle of visiting the driving centre personally. The facility should also be made available at Sanjh Kendras which were fully computerised. When a person can submit fees for a passport online, why this facility cannot be extended to the people who visit the driving centre?” he asked.

He urged MLAs and other elected representative of people to take up the issue with the DC.
