The Kapurthala police today claimed to have solved a murder case of a tractor-trailer driver of Dogranwala village, falling under the jurisdiction of the Kotwali police station here.

DSP Sandeep Singh Mand said Surjit Singh, alias Sonu, who used to ferry sand-filled tractor-trailers from Makhu to Kapurthala had been missing since September 1.

He said Inspector Hargurdev Singh of the Kotwali police station got a secret information on the basis of which the case had been tracked.

The DSP said Surjit had been working for owner Gopal Singh and had gone to the khud at Kusowal village near Makhu on August 31 to get sand.

“Since it started raining that evening, the sand mine got closed. He returned that night and again went to Makhu the next day. But he did not return. The family kept waiting for him till September 2 but even his phone was not getting connected,” said the DSP.

He said the brother of the deceased suspected Jagdeep Singh of Moga was behind the incident. On interrogation, he confessed to having killed Surjit to earn a quick buck by selling his tractor. Jagdeep reportedly killed Surjit by hitting him with a wooden board of the tractor. He then threw his body near the bandh while also hiding the board of tractor and phone of the victim.

The police have registered a case against Jagdeep Singh under Sections 302, 201 and 379 of the IPC.
