Jalandhar, October 16

The Jalandhar Police Commissionerate today launched the City Patrol—- a foot patrolling scheme in the city.

Launching the unique initiative from the Model Town market, Police Commissioner Praveen Kumar Sinha said the step was aimed towards enhancing better police-people connectivity. He said the effort was aimed at checking petty crime besides instilling a sense of confidence and trust among the people.

The initiative was the brainchild of the Director General of Police (DGP) Suresh Arora who has directed that this should be started in six big cities of the state, including Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Amritsar, Bathinda, Patiala and Mohali.

The Police Commissioner said under the scheme, 12 teams of police officials have been constituted with a male and female police official. These teams would patrol in the congested areas of the district on foot along with the interior bazaars. In case of any emergency, these teams would ensure rapid action by immediately reaching the site of the crime, he added.

The Police Commissioner said these officials would be equipped with ultra-modern gadgets and equipment to deal with any urgency. Besides a weapon, baton and handcuff, they would also have an arm band to reveal their identity.

These officials would also carry a tab with Vaahan and Beat Book App loaded in it for their convenience, better communication and performance.

The Police Commissioner said foot patrolling or beat patrolling has been an intrinsic part of policing and perhaps was among its oldest tradition. He said patrolling would increase the visibility of police in urban areas and help deter crime and enhance the feeling of safety among the residents. The step would also encourage greater contact with community, he added.
