Jalandhar, January 17
Activists of the Pendu Mazdoor Union (PMU) have decided to gherao the Block Development and Panchayat Officers in the state on January 29.
The PMU will also be burning effigies of the state Education Minister, OP Soni, on January 19 and 20 in support of children of Dalits and labourers across the state.
The decision in this regard was taken at a meeting of the union held here on Thursday under state president Tarsem Peter.
State press secretary of the union Kashmir Singh Gushore said while it had been two years since the Congress government came in power in the state, the issues of the poor, Dalits and labourers had not been addressed.
He said resolutions had been passed at villages to give grants to poor labourers for providing plots so that they could construct their homes.
Gushore added that giving one-year employment to them under the MGNREGA was one of their demands.
He said besides, giving employment allowances to labourers, increasing daily wages to at least Rs500 per day, payment of wages as per the MNREGA and provision for clean drinking water were their demands, which still remained pending.
