846 candidates file nominations

As many as 846 candidates filed nominations for the panchayat poll, scheduled to be held on December 30, on the first day in the district.

District Electoral Officer Varinder Kumar Sharma said 235 nominations, including 31 in Jalandhar East block, 19 in Adampur block, 22 in Shahkot block, 10 in Lohian block, 18 in Jalandhar West, 28 in Bhogpur block, 43 in Phillaur block, four in Nurmahal block, 31 in Rurka Kalan block, 11 in Nakodar block and 18 in Mehatpur block, were received for posts of sarpanch.

Sharma said 611 nominations, including 52 from Jalandhar East block, 48 from Adampur block, 56 from Shahkot block, 33 from Lohian block, 33 from Jalandhar West block, 65 from Bhogpur block, 100 from Phillaur block, 13 from Nurmahal block, 119 from Rurka block, 52 from Nakodar block and 40 from Mehatpur block, were received for posts of panch.

He said December 19 would be the last date for filing the nominations.

The DC said the papers would be scrutinised on December 20 while the date for withdrawal of the nominations would be December 21, which would also be the date for allotting the election symbols to the candidates.

The Jalandhar Deputy Commisioner  said the voting would be held on December 30 from 8 am to 4 pm and the counting of votes would be conducted by the district administration on the same day.
