Over 15 fire incidents were reported in the district last night as various shops, vehicles, a scrap unit, restaurant, raen basera, among other establishments, were gutted in various incidents reported both last night as well as early this morning.

Twenty shops in the Sudama market near Jyoti Chowk were gutted as an accidental fire destroyed these establishments in the area. While various fire safety vehicles were pressed into service in the area, all goods and garments in the shops were completely gutted in a fire which raged for several hours, making several fire-tenders to douses the flames.

A scrap unit in the Basti Mitthu area also caught fire early this morning causing a portion of the unit to be burnt. Twentyfive to 30 vehicles kept by the police near the Maqsoodan police station were also totally gutted in a fire last night. Also, comparatively smaller fire incidents were reported at the Jungle restaurant in Model Town and at a Rain Basera in Guru Tegh Bahadur Nagar late last night.

Commenting on so many fire incidents despite the cracker ban, Special Fire Officer Rajinder Sharma said, “Parachutes and rockets used by people are one of the prime causes of the incidents. While the cause of the incident was estimated to be the fire caused by such crackers and fireworks, we are still estimating the damage from the total losses caused to property.”
