The Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the Behbal Kalan firing case has categorically rejected media reports claiming clean chit to some persons and pointed out that only a single challan filed by it against a suspect had been selectively taken into consideration to come to erroneous conclusions.

In a press release issued on last evening, a spokesperson for the Punjab Police said the case was under investigation, with many aspects yet to be probed.

There was no question of giving a clean chit to anyone till the completion of the investigation, said the spokesperson.

The 792-page challan submitted in a Faridkot court and cited in the media reports was against only one accused, i.e. former SSP Charanjit Singh Sharma.

The challan was based on strong evidence, with investigation against him on other aspects still in progress, said the spokesperson, adding that after the completion of the probe, a supplementary challan (s) would be presented in the court against all those who would be found guilty as per law, including Sharma.

Pointing out that the said media reports had mentioned that Special Investigation Team was yet to file a challan against at least three other persons named in the FIR — SP Bikramjeet Singh, Pradeep Kumar and Amarjit Singh — the spokesperson said it was quite obvious that the challan filed so far was based on limited investigation.

The spokesperson made it clear that action would be taken against the guilty in the 2015 case.
