Jalandhar, October 15
Deputy Commissioner Varinder Kumar Sharma on Saturday felicitated the panchayat and progressive farmers of Mehsampur village, near Mehatpur, in the Nakodar sub-division for unanimously taking a path-breaking decision to not burn paddy straw.
Sharma, along with other officials of the district administration, visited the village in the early morning. Interacting with villagers, he lauded the efforts taken by the villagers and said the step of the village was a visionary decision aimed at safeguarding the environment of the state on the one hand and the life of younger generations on the other.
He said at a time when checking the paddy straw burning was the need of the hour, this village would emerge as a torchbearer to guide the destiny of people.
The Deputy Commissioner said though the management of the paddy straw was a little expensive task than burning it, the farmers must adopt the latest techniques for this purpose through cooperative societies on a custom-hiring basis or by pooling the resources.
He said the time was ripe when farmers must adopt the innovative techniques in the larger interest of humanity.
