The Municipal Corporation has been encouraging resident welfare societies for making compost at home.

Blue-coloured perforated bins with lids are being distributed at a nominal cost under a Swachhta project among residents. Its objective is to reduce the volume of waste at the source.

Under the programme, demonstrations are being given for disposing of kitchen waste into these bins. Packed with dry leaves and a microbial mixture, these bins, provided by the Kheti Virasat Mission, can be used for making compost. These can be readied in 30-45 days and used for gardens and potted plants at home.

MC Joint Commissioner Aashika Jain has got the project started on a larger scale in Nangal Shama.

Safai karamcharis, who collect organic waste separately, bring it to a huge dump site.

As compost keeps getting ready, they are able to sell it to residents.

“Initially when we started the project, over 500 houses came forward. We gave them two bins. As the first one will be full and be kept aside for compost making, they can go on filling the second one. Since there are perforations and dry leaves are used in layers in between, the waste does not discharge any smell. People have been giving a good response. It has also helped us reduce the volume of waste to less than half from each household indulging in it. The project has a potential to get spread like a chain reaction,” she added.
