Kanya Maha Vidyalaya (KMV) celebrated Lohri for marginalised sections. Mayor Sunil Jyoti was the chief guest on the occasion. Principal Prof Atima Sharma Dwivedi said the institution had been celebrating "Dheeyan di Lohri" since its inception. This year, the festive celebration included 50 children from the economically backward section of the society. They were given books and sweets by the chief guest and the principal. The principal said nearly 2,200 economically weaker girls were being imparted education free of cost at the institution. Sunil Jyoti outlined the importance of cultural celebration in a culturally diverse country like India. Students danced to cultural songs. The organiser, Dr Kamaljit, Head of the department of music, Dr Madhumeet, Dean, students welfare, Dr Gurjot, Dean, ECA, Amarpreet Khurana, co-ordinator, women studies centre, Dr Harpreet and Dr Deepika, co-ordinator, ECA, Dr Monica Director, Gandhian Studies Centre, played an important role in organising the event.
‘Our girl, our pride’
The CT Group of Institutions and Model Town Shopkeepers Association (MTSA) presented 'Our Girl, Our Pride,' an initiative towards saving the girl child. Sudarvizhi, ADCP, Traffic, Gursharanjit Singh, ACP, Model Town and Deepika Singh, IPS, ACP, Jalandhar Police, were the special guests of the event. Deepika Singh encouraged youngsters to come out and fight for the cause of saving the girl child. Sudarvizhi said female foeticide was a national problem and a social evil and people should not differentiate between girls and boys. Parminder Kaur Channi, co-chairperson, CT Group of Institutions, said, “We seek an environment where every unborn child is welcomed without any gender bias. Rohan Sehgal, president, MTSA, said, "The slogan of 'do or die' was once used for the cause of motherland. Now, the unborn girl child is also seeking similar spirit." —TNS
