A labourer working on a road project was killed on the spot here today when a tipper filled with coal tar fell on him. The incident took place at a busy intersection at the Partap Pura area in Buta Mandi.

While the road-laying work of the Municipal Corporation was being done under contractor Satish Aggarwal, the tipper turned to a side when driver Kewal Krishan was driving it in back gear this evening.

Labourer Surinder (27), who was behind the tipper, was crushed against the wall of a house at the place with the hot coal tar getting on Surinder and killing him on the spot.

Sources said it was a mishap as the road suddenly caved in under the pressure of the tipper and the tipper collapsed into the huge depression, turning sideways with its material crushing the labourer who was caught off guard by the sudden development.

ASI police station division No. 6 Sarabjit Singh said, “The tipper driver was unaware of the bad state of the road. The incident was clearly an accident. Since it happened by mistake, we have not filed any case so far. Nor has a complaint been lodged with us.”
