KMV bags Central skill development scheme

The Kanya Maha Vidyalaya has become the only college in Guru Nanak Dev University to be sanctioned the ‘Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Kaushal Kendra’, which is a skill development and training centre scheme of the Central Government, to ensure employability and empower youth.

The college has bagged a Rs 4.15-crore grant for running five courses which shall be started under the kendra.

Only 48 of the 708 colleges, which applied for setting up of such kendras, were selected.

The courses sanctioned to the KMV under this scheme are - office management and secretarial practices, retail management, textile designing and apparel technology, nutrition, exercise and health and fashion photography and journalism.

The minimum qualification for pursuing these courses will be Class XII and these will be open for all age groups.

Addressing a press conference on the matter here today, college principal Atima Sharma Dwivedi said: “The syllabi of these courses has been designed with the help of industrial experts and the National Skills Council. The programme also includes industrial internship for students so that they can be ready for jobs. Various exit levels shall also be available under the courses for the students. The courses shall offer exit levels like certificate level - six months, diploma level - one year, advanced diploma level – two years and degree level – three years. A student will obtain a certificate after the completion of a six-month course. Meanwhile, students enrolling in the course would have a fee structure of Rs 7,500 per semester.”

The job-oriented vocational courses would also be in sync with the National Skills Qualification Framework (NSQF). The KMV has signed around 25 MoUs with top industries to give training to students, she said.

MoUs and tie-ups with various industrial, medical and other units like Delhi PIMS (Punjab Institute of Medical Sciences, Jalandhar), Government Medical College, Chandigarh; Shri Ram Cardiac Centre, Jalandhar; Institute of Health and Hygiene, Delhi; - Yogapathy, Jalandhar; Body Zone Gym, Jalandhar; Dream Weavers Edutrack Private Limited, Jalandhar among others have been inked by the college for the courses.

Dr Dwivedi said the allotment of these courses would give impetus to KMV’s mission of making students globally employable.

The KMV shall also be running a diploma in animation course under the community college status granted to it by the UGC. A grant of Rs 61.76 lakh has been received by the college for the Community College Scheme. Class XII qualified students - in any stream – would be eligible to take admission to this course which will be available at a fee structure of Rs 2,000 for one semester.
