After the implementation of the inter-state e-way bill last month on April 1, the government is now all set to roll out the e-way bills for the intra-state movement of goods in Punjab, applicable to everyone from June 1.

As per the details received from officials, in a letter issued by the Additional Excise and Taxation Commissioner 1, Punjab, on May 18, the e-way bill portal is available for the generation of e-way bills for the intra-state movement of goods in the state of Punjab on a trial basis. The letter says that stakeholders are requested to generate the e-way bills from the portal on a trial basis to get well versed with the system before its implementation on June 1.

The Excise and Taxation Officer, Jalandhar 1, Darveer Raj, said, “Earlier, e-way bills were mandatory for sending or receiving goods from outside Punjab from April 1. Now, the intra-state bill is all set to be implemented. The notification and details regarding about it are all available on the site as well officials have been appointed to look after the queries and help traders in case of any difficulty being faced.”

A lot of hue and cry was raised by traders and the business community when e-way bills were started initially on February 1.

It was due to the complaints of technical constraints and concerns raised by the trading and business community, who said that it was a difficult procedure, that the date of the implementation of e-way bills was postponed by the Central Government for two months and implemented on April. But that was for the inter-state goods sent/received from other states in Punjab.

The government in April only declared that once the system was adopted by all, e-way bills would be required in the intra-state movement of goods as well (within the state of Punjab). Now from April 1, e-way bills will be required for the inter-state transportation of goods, whose value is above Rs 50,000.

About the bill

  • The e-way bill is an electronic bill for the movement of goods, which can be generated on the e-way bill portal
  • Transport of goods of more than Rs 50,000 (single invoice, bill, delivery or challan) in a vehicle cannot be made by a registered person without an e-way bill
  • When an e-way bill is generated, a unique e-way bill number (EBN) is allocated and is available to the supplier, recipient and the transporter
