Impersonating as travel agent, cops held for fraud

The police on Thursday arrested a constable, posted at the PAP sports centre, for allegedly duping people posing as a travel agent.

The accused has been identified as Vikramjit Singh, who was arrested from the railway station. The police also recovered 16 passports, 10 mobile phones and a Swift Car from the accused.

A case under Sections 406 and 420 of the IPC and under the Punjab Travel Professionals Regulation (PAPA) Act 2012 has been registered against the accused.

DCP (Investigation) Gurmeet Singh said, “During an investigation, the accused revealed that he has been working as a travel agent for the past two years. He informed the police that he had taken money from several residents in the region.”

Vikramjit Singh had joined the Punjab Police in 2017 under a sports quota.

Maninder Singh, a resident of Patiala, and Prabhdeep Singh, a resident of Jalandhar, had filed a complaint with the police. In their complaint, Maninder said the accused duped him of Rs4.5 lakh, while Prabhdeep said he was duped of Rs14.5 lakh.

The DCP said the accused used to flee away with victims’ money and passports.
