Hit by novice driver, woman dies

JALANDHAR: A woman in her late 20s died in a freak accident as the motorcycle she was riding on was hit by a novice car driver at Mota Singh Nagar here on Saturday morning.

A woman in her late 20s died in a freak accident as the motorcycle she was riding on was hit by a novice car driver at Mota Singh Nagar here on Saturday morning.

The deceased, Nirmala Devi, who was a teacher and a resident of New Jawahar Nagar, was on her way to school with her brother-in-law. Eyewitnesses said a speeding car hit the motorcycle. While she died on the spot, her brother-in-law Jagdish received fractures on his both legs, besides other injuries. He was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital.

The police reached the spot after the incident and later took possession of the car. The car was driven by a woman, who was learning to drive. She was driving Honda Amaze car. Before the accident, she suddenly lost control and pressed accelerator instead of break.

Meanwhile, ASI Harinder Singh, who is investigating the case, said Nirmala was a teacher in a convent school and she and her brother-in-law were on their way to her school.

The doctor at the hospital said Jagdish had got fractures on his legs. In addition, his ankle too got dislocated. The doctor added that there was 70-80 per cent chance of complete recovery.
