Jalandhar, September 15

To discourage the use of polythene bags, members of “Inner Wheel Club, Jalandhar” organised a drive against the practice of using polythene bags at Urban Estate, Sabji Mandi.

Members of the club distributed more than 750 handmade bags manufactured from used clothes. While distributing the bags among vendors and commuters, members encouraged the people to use only cotton bags or eco-friendly bags.

However, vendors resisted to take the bags and said a complete ban on polythene bags could only be observed if they were made unavailable in the market. Youngsters actively took part in the initiative and supported the club in distributing the cloth bags.

Prior to the drive the members Inder Kiran, Gurpreet, Raj Gill and others collected used clothes from residents and then used them for making carry bags. They hired some girls to carry-out the stitching job.

“The entire cost of the project, amounting to Rs 15,000, was borne by the Club, Inder Kiran and Raj Gill,” said Gurpreet Kaur, president of the club and asked the residents to stop and use of poly bags and instead carry their own bags. Meena Devi, a resident of the city, was pleased at this reusable mean of carrying grocery items and vegetables. She said it was convenient to use these bags than to carry polythene bags.”
