Jalandhar, August 11

Members of a traders’ forum said they wanted ‘lokraj’ and not ‘danda raj’ under the Congress-led state government during a meeting here on Saturday.

They said before coming to power, the government had said no property tax would be levied, but nothing of that sort had happened.

A proposal by the Municipal Corporation that a team from the corporation would go along with police officials to check maps of houses was disturbing as they did not want the police to visit the houses and ask taxes from residents, the members said.

“The property tax will be recovered and water bills will are also being continued now despite the fact that the government had promised to do away with the same,” Ravinder Dhir, one of the members, said.

He added that around 70 per cent of the residents had not given paid the tax and bills as the government had said it would be abolished.

“We request the corporation to withdraw the proposal of sending police officials to houses to recover the tax,” they said.
