Government colleges get Rs 137 lakh grant

The foundation structure of Punjab Government colleges is being strengthened and there is no dearth of money with the state for the same.

This was stated by Higher Education and Water Supply and Sanitation Minister Surjit Singh Rakhra at Sports College here.

The minister gave cheques worth Rs 137 lakh on the occasion to heads of 15 government colleges of Jalandhar, Kapurthala, Amritsar, Tarn Taran, Hoshiarpur and Gurdaspur to strengthen the basic infrastructure of the institutions.

The minister, who was in the town to review the ongoing work of Sports College, Jalandhar, said earlier, grants of Rs 50 lakh each had already been disbursed to some colleges to strengthen their infrastructure and if more money was needed, then the department would provide them the same.

He appealed to college principals to take personal interest in providing quality education to students.

He said facilities like clean toilets and clean drinking water had been made available at all rural and urban schools in the state and RO units had also been installed in rural areas.

SDM Jalandhar-II Varinderpal Singh Bajwa; Additional Director, Sports, Hardeep Singh Teja; officiating engineer, water supply and sanitation RK Talwar; Dr Paramjit Kaur Jassal, principal, Sports College, Jalandhar, were among those others present.

Government colleges of Amritsar, Ajnala, Zeera, Gurdaspur, Kala Afghana, Hoshiarpur, Talwara, Tanda Urmur, Jandiala, Pojowal, Tarn Taran and Jalandhar were among those who awarded cheques.

The minister said the authorities concerned should expedite the work of the construction of the college foundation. The event was coordinated by Prof Kulbir Singh from the college, along with the principal.
