Jalandhar, February 13

Under the ‘Parho Punjab Padhao Punjab’ project, a district-level vocabulary competition of 1,000 most commonly used English words was conducted at Government School, Nehru Garden, here, today. Nineteen teams from each block competed in the event.

Harpreet Kaur, State Education Coordinator, said a downfall was observed among students of government schools. The learning ability of the students was found weak.

She said the learning programme was conducted in two formats — baseline test, covering basics of English and Endline Test. The Endline Test results will determine whether whatever the students were taught through these foundation courses was fruitful or not.

Four subjects — science, mathematics, English and social science — have been picked and the tests will determine the proficiency of students from Class VI to Class VIII, she added.

In the vocabulary boosting course, students of the 438 government schools were taught 1,000 English words of daily usage and a competition was organised at the school-level, block-level and district-level, said Chandrashekhar Kumar, who has been appointed as the district mentor for the programme.

Harpreet, Muskan and Dimple Sharma of GHS, Manko, obtained the first position. Simran, Mehak and Khushi of Government Girls Senior Secondary School, Ladowali Road, and Radhika, Komal and Ruhi of Goverment Girls Secondary School, Malsian, remaned second and third, respectively.
