Friday Dry Day drives finally begin

JALANDHAR: The health authorities in the district finally began the Dry Day drives this Friday to counter dengue and other vector-borne diseases in the summer season.

The health authorities in the district finally began the Dry Day drives this Friday to counter dengue and other vector-borne diseases in the summer season.

On the instructions of the Family Welfare Department, Punjab, the drive was initiated under the Civil Surgeon, Dr Maninder Kaur Minhas, at her office here today.

The checking of coolers and other spots which could possibly breed dengue larvae on the premises of the Civil Hospital was initiated today. Talking about the drive, Dr Minhas said under the National Vector Borne Disease Control programme, to counter dengue, chikungunya, malaria, among other diseases, the Dry Day drives had been initiated from Friday to destroy any larvae breeding at potential places.

She said while the larvae of these diseases bred in water, prevention from theses diseases warranted thorough cleaning of the spots where such breeding might take place.

The health authorities had also initiated Dry Day drives every Friday last year along with the MC officials to counter dengue in the district as per which challaning had also been started.

Scrap shops near Alaska Chowk, Government Senior Secondary School for Girls, among other areas, were also visited under the drive.

Dr Preet Kamal, IDSP in charge, Purshottam Lal, mass media officer, deputy mass media officer Shashi Bala and Kulwant Tandi were in the teams that carried out the drive.
