Jalandhar: An NRI here on Saturday alleged that a family of bankers from Pathankot had committed a fraud of Rs 16 crore with him. A case under Sections 420 and 120-B of the IPC has been registered against the accused. Addressing a press conference, Dr Vinod Kumar, the complainant, said the main accused worked as a banker in Dubai and he took Rs 16 crore from him as fees and charges for a loan. He sought police intervention in the matter. SHO, police division No. 3, said an FIR was earlier registered, but it was cancelled as the complainant doesn't have proper proofs. He also said if any fraud had happened, it had taken place in Australia and Dubai, so this doesn't come under their jurisdiction.championship. Speech competition 

Jalandhar: To mark Independence Day, the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication of Guru Nanak Dev University, regional campus, held an inter-departmental speech competition here on Saturday. As many as 15 students from various departments took part in the event. Students delivered speeches on Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru and Dr Abdul Kalam. Dr Roopam Jagota and Sukriti Bahuguna were the judges of the event. Dr Namrata Joshi, head of the department, motivated the students to have a positive outlook towards the country. OC

One commits suicide  

Phagwara: An unidentified middle-aged person reportedly committed suicide by jumping in front of a train near the local railway station on Friday night. The Government Railway Police has registered a case and sent the body to the mortuary after postmortem. In another incident, an unidentified beggar was found dead in mysterious circumstance at the railway station on Friday last night. OC
