The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has strictly asked the schools affiliated to it to follow the National Flag code and not to use plastic flags during the Independence Day celebrations.
It has been directed in a circulation that the board cares about the national honour and environment. It has asked strict compliance with the Flag Code of India 2002 and The Prevention of Insults to National Honour Act, 1971 by not using plastic flags during the celebrations.
Many schools in the city, as per the circular, have also decided not to use plastic flags. Students have been encouraged to make flags of hand-woven wool, khadi and cotton or silk. Rashmi Vij, principal, Police DAV School, said, “We never allow our students to celebrate the occasion with plastic flags. We encourage them to celebrate the day with flags made of khadi or cotton.”
According to sections of Flag Code of India 2002 and Prevention of Insult to National Honour Act, 1971, “The flag made of paper may be waved by the public on the occasions of important national, cultural and sports events. However, such paper flags should not be discarded or thrown on the ground after the event. As far as possible, it should be disposed of in private maintaining the dignity of the flag.”
Moreover, the National Flag that represents the national honour and dignity of the nation should not be used as festoon, bunting or in any other manner for decoration.
