Jalandhar, March 27

Farmers across the state have been expecting a bumper wheat crop this season. The Agriculture Department, Jalandhar, has estimated the yield to be 3.28 lakh metric ton from the 1.69 hectare of farming land in the district this season.

Last year, Jalandhar district had nearly 3.12 lakh metric ton yield from the same quantum of land. Optimum weather and no disease attack are considered to be the factors for a better yield this time. Jugraj Singh, Chief Agriculture Officer, Jalandhar, said, “We have been expecting better yield this season as compared to last years.”

Since the government has already announced the date of procurement in the state, which is April 1, it is expected that Jalandhar district would have delayed procurement as the sowing of wheat was delayed by several days. However, the district administration is all set to start the procurement on April 1.

Narinder Singh, District Food and Civil Supply Officer, said, “All arrangements have been made. All six agencies will procure the wheat.” He said tenders for the transportation and loading-unloading process would be finalised on March 29.
