The Excise and Taxation Department has detained six cars, which were brought from Jammu and Kashmir by the Punjab dealers.

ETO (mobile wing) Satpal said cars were detained to inquire if the dealers had evaded VAT on the cars. If any dealer of Punjab wants to sell cars brought from other states, he has to pay 14 per cent VAT to the department.

As of now, there was no confirmation whether dealers had paid VAT on these cars or not. “No dealer has appeared to present his side before the excise department. Once a dealer appears, he will confirm the payment or non-payment of tax and then the required tax will be levied,” said the ETO. Notably, these cars were sold by J&K residents after they were damaged in recent floods.—TNS
