Disappointed due to the alleged police inaction against some encroachers, an elderly man reportedly committed suicide by consuming some poisonous substance in his house in the New Satnampura locality late on Saturday night. The deceased, Paul Singh (75), was immediately admitted to Johal Hospital in Jalandhar where he breathed his last on Sunday.

After the death of the victim, the Satnampura police have registered a case under Section 306, IPC, against four persons — Gurdarshan Lal, Surjit Kaur, her husband Sarabjit Singh and a property dealer Rajinder Sharma on Sunday.

Sukhjit Kaur, the daughter of the deceased who lodged the complaint, told the police that her father purchased a plot in the local Thapar Colony a few months ago and constructed a boundary wall. However, when her father went to the place last month, he noticed that a few persons had illegally encroached upon his plot.

She alleged that though her father informed the police, the police failed to take action against the encroachers.

Sukhjit alleged that when her father again visited his plot on Saturday, the encroachers abused him and misbehaved with him.

She said afterwards her father, who was upset, came home and went to his room and took the extreme step. The police handed over the body to his family members after autopsy which was conducted at the local Civil Hospital.
