ECI bans exit polls

JALANDHAR: The Election Commission of India (ECI) has banned exit polls between April 11 (first phase of voting) and May 19 considering the ensuing LS elections.

The Election Commission of India (ECI) has banned exit polls between April 11 (first phase of voting) and May 19 considering the ensuing LS elections.

Divulging about the ECI’s directions, District Election Officer-cum-Deputy Commissioner Varinder Kumar Sharma said under the provisions of Section 126-A of the Representation of the Peoples Act, 1951, exit polls could not be conducted and publicised by means of print and electronic media or dissemination in any other manner till May 19, 2019 (6.30 pm).”

He further clarified that display of any election matter, including results of any opinion poll or any other poll survey, in any electronic media was prohibited during the period 48 hours, including the hour fixed for conclusion of voting in each of the phases in connection with the elections.
