A departmental probe has begun against ASI Jang Bahadur, who was posted at the Adampur police station here, a day after a 13-year-old was crushed to death by a school bus at Safipur village.

The parents of the victim, Rachna, alleged that the ASI, who was also the inquiry officer in the case, tried to tamper with the registration number of the bus to save the school authorities. The victim was coming from her school when her bicycle was hit by the speeding bus of a private school resulting in her death.

The parents alleged that the ASI, after the incident, tampered with the registration number of the bus which was involved in the accident. Later, the parents refused to cremate the body of the victim.

The parents reportedly demanded action against the ASI and said they would not cremate the body till the police take action against him. They said they would hold a protest outside the police station.

SSP Navjot Singh Mahal said the departmental inquiry had begun and action would be taken accordingly.

Meanwhile, a case was registered under Sections 304A (causing death by negligence), 279 (rash driving or riding on a public way) and 427 (mischief causing damage to the amount of Rs 50) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) against the accused driver, identified as Sarabjit Singh, a resident of Hoshiarpur, at the Adampur police station.
