Jalandhar, August 18

After witnessing much hullabaloo over claiming the credit for the completion of the Jalandhar-Kapurthala four-laning project by the BJP and Congress, the Municipal Corporation, Jalandhar, finally started the construction work on the stretch today.

Mayor Sunil Jyoti said the construction of the stretch would be completed in a month.

Though the civic body had initiated the work on the road earlier, the project halted after a controversy erupted over the ownership of the road between the MC and the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI).

Though the issue between the two organisations was sorted out a few months ago with the NHAI winning the battle, the work could not be started as the PSPCL did not remove electric poles erected on both sides of the road. Due to these, the widening of the road could not take place.

However on Thursday, Congress MP Chaudhary Santokh, along with Congress MLA Sushil Rinku, visited the spot and granted Rs 25 lakh for the project. The MP also announced that the electric poles would be removed within a month.

Following this, the Mayor and BJP district president Ramesh Sharma also visited the spot today and got the work commenced with immediate effect.

The commencement of the long-pending work has indeed brought cheers to area residents as they are facing a tough time owing to the stones laid on the road.
