Phagwara, October 13

Fancy Cloth Store, a famous cloth shop at the Gaushala Bazaar here, was gutted in a fire which broke out in the wee hours today.

Clothes worth lakhs of rupees were destroyed in the fire. A short-circuit was stated to be the reason behind the incident.

According to eyewitnesses, the fire spread in the shop in a few minutes and turned all material lying there into ashes.

Amit Kumar, owner of the shop, said electricity supply wires dangle outside the shops in the market. He said yesterday he went home after closing the shop at night.

At around 4 am, he received a call from his shopkeeper friend Ashwini Kumar that dense smoke and flames were coming out of his shop. Ashwini himself informed the Fire Brigade and Powercom staff to cut the power supply in the area to control the fire.

Three fire tenders of the Fire Brigade made efforts for three and a half hours to control the fire.
