Wrestler Mandeep was declared the winner at the annual Chinjh festival being celebrated with great fervour at the over century-old Brahm Akhara at Devi Talab Mandir on the occasion of Makra Sankranti.

A wrestling competition was organised on the occasion where wrestlers from all over the state displayed their show of strength. Wrestler Mandeep, while displaying a good show of grit and strength, defeated wrestler Sandeep from the same “akhara”.

According to media in charge of the event Surinder Billa, the “akhara” is around 100 years old and has seen many renowned wrestlers of the country. “We hold the event every year on Makra Sankranti and many wrestlers, including renowned politicians from the region, also take part in the event,” said Billa.

He said when the deadly menace of drugs had taken many youths in its grip, sports like these were still playing an important role in curbing the menace to a great extent.
