With 23 new positive cases of chikungunya today, the total cases of the ailment in the district have reached 108. Notably, with 30 more dengue cases reported yesterday, the number of dengue cases in the district has already reached 402.

Meanwhile, even as both dengue and chikungunya statistics growing at an alarming rate, the thousands of suspected dengue and viral fever cases in the district also remains a cause of concern for the health authorities. Cases from the Basti areas, sensitive areas like Maqsudan, Shaheed Babu Labh Singh Nagar, Gandhi Camp, Rama Mandi, Abatar Nagar and the villages in the periphery continue to rise.

While in dengue alone, the number has risen by more than 100 in less than a month, chikungunya has also crossed the 100 mark within a month of the first cases being reported in the district. So far, five lives in the district have been claimed by dengue.

To intensify its efforts to counter dengue in the district, a dengue awareness rally was also taken out in Jalandhar today. Flagged off by the Civil Surgeon, Dr Rajiv Bhalla, the rally saw the participation of many school students who took out the cycle rally bearing dengue prevention and awareness placards.
