Baseline evaluation for Class I to V from Aug 13

JALANDHAR: In a bid to improve the quality of education in the state and to analyse whether the students have understood the concepts of different subjects taught to them, the Education Department will hold the baseline evaluation of maths, English, science, social science and Punjabi for students of Class I to Class V from August 13.

In a bid to improve the quality of education in the state and to analyse whether the students have understood the concepts of different subjects taught to them, the Education Department will hold the baseline evaluation of maths, English, science, social science and Punjabi for students of Class I to Class V from August 13.

Around 8.5 lakh students of Class I to V of 12,000 government primary schools of the state would be evaluated. Such an exercise is being carried out in schools to upgrade the skills of government school students and check the progress report of ‘Parho Punjab Parhao Punjab’ project, under which new teaching techniques has been functional in schools since long.

In the first baseline tests conducted in August 2017 improvement was found in the performance of primary school students under the pilot project which revealed that at the beginning of the project, around 29.5 per cent students understood the basics. Around 70 per cent students were able to do so.

The schools have been sent ‘Baseline Testing Evaluation Tools’ for different subjects. Teachers of the first, second, third, fourth and fifth standard will be given these tools and from August 13, the baseline tests will begin.

The classes having a large number of students will be evaluated in groups from August 13 to 14. In case the evaluation could not be completed in two days, the Parho Punjab Parhao team has been asked to assist teachers to conduct the test and help teachers in evaluating the results, reads the notice issued by Education Department.

District coordinators of the Parho Punjab Parhao Punjab project, district education officers, schools heads and teachers have been notified regarding the baseline test. The project in charge has been asked to make the arrangements and ensure smooth conduct of the test. The schools have also been asked to submit the report of the test by August 31.

The training regarding this has already been given at the district-level. An assessment sheet has also being sent along with the evaluation tools, in which all records regarding the baseline test will be filled.

District Coordinator Parho Punjab Parhao Punjab project Varindervir Singh, said, “The baseline test will be helpful to gauge the progress of the project and find out where exactly students stand and if they understand the concepts being taught to them or not. The results of the different blocks will be collected and a fair analysis of the test will be ensured. ”
