An awareness drive to create awareness on the fast disappearance of house sparrows and other urban birds was carried out by the Environment Club of Hans Raj Mahila Maha Vidyalaya (HMV), Jalandhar. Principal Ajay Sareen expressed her concern that house sparrows were vanishing from our environment and the need of the hour was to take immediate and effective steps to safeguard these birds that had been the close companions of humans for numerous centuries. Students of various classes of the college were taken for a nature proximity walk and were also shown documentary films to feel close to sparrows and understand their importance. Jyoti Kaul, in-charge of the club initiated the celebrations marking World Sparrow Day and told the students that birds also felt like us and we needed to ensure their safety. Dr Anjana Bhatia, secretary of the club, laid stress on the causes of the disappearance of the sparrows and told the students that the most important cause for the disappearance of the sparrows was increasing radiations from mobile towers, loss of their habitat and lack of grain outside our houses. She said we must put water and grain for the sparrows on our roof tops and outside our houses. The students of the club prepared sparrow splashes to be placed on the campus. Bird houses for the sparrows were also planned. Dean, Academics, Meenakshi Sayal, also urged the students to grow more plants to reinstate the habitat of house sparrows.

Sports meet

At the Apeejay College of Fine Arts, Jalandhar, the department of physical education and Students Welfare Association jointly organised an inter-department sports competition on the college playground on Saturday. Students exhibited enthusiasm and vibrance by taking part in various events like tug-of- war, three-legged race, lemon race, bucket and balls, circle around the wicket and musical chair. Faculty and the students, gathered in large number, constantly applauded the participants. A riot of hues and vibrance surrounded the college campus. Staff members also participated in the lemon race and the musical chair.Principal Sucharita lauded the efforts of the students and said the real aim of education was the holistic development of an individual’s personality and sports played a vital role in inculcating qualities like tolerance, co-operation, sportsmanship and camaraderie among the students. The event concluded with the prize distribution ceremony. The winners were awarded certificates and medals. The principal also applauded the efforts of Vishav Bandhu Verma, head of the department of history and Satinder Kumar, assistant Prof of physical education for conducting the event.

High scores

Undergraduate students of Kanya Maha Vidyalaya (KMV),Jalandhar, participated in the National Graduate Physics Examination (NGPE) conducted by the Indian Association of Physics Teachers (IAPT). Undergraduate non-medical and computer science students of the KMV participated in the examination. Eight students of BSc (I, II and III) Gagandeep, Minakshi Devi, Kritika Arya, Arushi, Manminder Kaur, Abha, Shweta Sharma and Aashima Sharma qualified the test with top 10 per cent at the national-level. Principal Atima Sharma Dwivedi congratulated the students and inspired them.

Workshop on bridal makeup organised

A one-day workshop on ‘Bridal makeup’ was organised by the department of cosmetology of the PCM SD College for Women, Jalandhar. Sonam Sharma (makeup artist) was the resource person. She told students about products to be used during the bridal makeup. Live demonstration was also given to the students. The students enthusiastically participated in the workshop. Principal Kiran Arora said such workshops helped in the devopment of the personality of the students and also enhanced their skills. She congratulated the students of the department for organising such workshops. —TNS

National seminar

National Seminar on 'Bal Sahitya' (Literature for children) was organised at Kamla Nehru College for Women, Phagwara in association with National Book Trust, New Delhi on Saturday. The theme for the seminar was ' Badalte Samay mein badalta bal sahitya' (The changes in children's literature with changing times). Pankaj Chaturvedi, Editor from National Book Trust, New Delhi was special guest at the event and conducted the stage. The event began with a release of books 'Vishnu Prabhakar ki chuninda bal kahaniya' and 'Amar Goswami ki chuninda bal kahaniya'. Dr Asha Sharma, Head of Hindi department, KNCW and Dr. Suman Lata from Kamla Nehru College of Education, Phagwara presented their views on these books. Devendra Mewari, famous children's literature writer was the chairperson for the technical session. Eminent resource persons from across the country were part of the session and presented their views on the topic. These included Renu Chauhan, eminent writer from Delhi; Anil Jaiswal, Associate Editor, Nandan, New Delhi; Dr Darshan Singh Asht, Sahitya academy Awardee from Patiala; Dr Kamlesh Bhartiya, eminent writer from Hissar; Dr Rashmi Khurana, retd. assistant station director, AIR, Jalandhar and Dr Preet Arora. While speaking on the occasion, the resource persons talked about the need to change the content of our literature for children in tandem with the changes that the society is witnessing. Since the children of today have many options as far as recreational activities are concerned, the also stressed on the need for parents become companions for their children and engage them in reading books. Principal of the college, Dr. Kiran Walia welcomed the guests and thanked them for their enlightening views. She also congratulated Post Graduate Department of Hindi on the successful organisation of the event. —OC
