Annual sports meet kicks off at LPU

Lovely Professional University inaugurated the two-day 9th annual sports meet at its sports stadium. Sportspersons of the university competed in different categories after the emblematic torch relay invocation.

On the inaugural day, finals for shot put, discus throw, triple jump, 1500 mt and 800 mt races; semi-finals for 100 mt race; and heats rounds for 400mt, and 4x400 mt relay were held in both men’s and women’s categories.

Prior to this, colourful march past was held where 40 contingents comprising thousands of participants provided the annual meet an Olympic dimension.

The meet was inaugurated by LPU Chancellor Ashok Mittal by letting pigeons and balloons fly into the sky.

Mittal inspired university sportspersons to establish new records to reach national and international sports arena.

In addition to students from LPU School of Physical Education, students from professional programmes of sciences, technology, paramedical sciences, architecture, journalism and fine arts also won many gold and silver medals.

LPU distance education students too competed and shared victory-stand with regular students.

Results

Shot put (men) — Naveen (10.01 mt) was first, Shubham (9.6 mt) second and Paramjit (9.55 mt) was third.

In the women’s category, Suman Chowdhary (7.35 mt) remained first, Mahima (7.26 mt) second and Kumari Manisha (7.08 mt) third.

In triple jump (men), Priankar stood first with 12.6 mt jump, Naval second with 12.2 mt and Vijayath third with 11.9 mt jump.

In the women’s category, Kuh Zang was first with 8.5 mt jump, Priyanka Kumari second with 8.3 mt and Komal with 7.9 mt jump.

In 1500 mt race for men, Abhinav stood first, Arpit Singh second and Manish Rana stood third. In the women’s category, Kusum stood first, Jyoti second and Priyanka stood third.
