The Animal Husbandry Department, Hoshiarpur, organised a camp under Assistance to States for Control of Animal Diseases (ASCAD) scheme at Bajwara village here on Wednesday. The camp was organised to give a boost to the welfare of animal population in the state.

Dr Rana Preet Gill, posted as Veterinary Officer, Bajwara, emphasised that these camps encourage the farmers to opt for self-employment by getting into alternate practices like goat farming and pig rearing. Dr Rajinder Parihar, Senior Veterinary Officer, Hoshiarpur, gave a detailed framework of all such schemes and the subsidy provided by government to set up such units.

“In today’s times, when jobs are scarce, such camps have acquired manifold importance because they create awareness about new job avenues. For farmers, they provide an additional source of income if they engage in rearing of small animals, which require less space and management, along with the crop production”, the veterinarian said.

Dr Tajinder Singh and Dr Jagtar Singh from the department also discussed the impact of stubble burning on the health of animals. They advocated the need to put a stop on this age old practice which is causing respiratory diseases in the animals. Free medicines were also distributed at the camp.
