Jalandhar, November 17

Anganwari workers held a convention in Jalandhar today, declaring a countrywide protest against the policies of the Central government by all trade unions on January 8 and 9.

Employees of the Anganwari Employees Union Punjab (CITU), under the patronage of chairperson, Dharamjit Kaur and state president Harjit Kaur Panjola, held a convention at the Desh Bhagat Yadgaar Hall here.

The activists from 11 districts — Jalandhar, Kapurthala, Tarn Taran, Amritsar, Gurdaspur, Pathankot, Nawanshahr, Hoshiarpur, Faridkot, Ferozepur and Fazilka— participated in the convention.

Usha Rani, state president, All India Federation of Anganwari Workers and Helpers was also present.

The protesters said there were constant efforts towards the privatisation of the ICDS scheme in the country, which was the backbone of the underprivileged.

They said all trade unions would held a countrywide protest against the anti-people policies of the government.

Subhash Rani, state general secretary of the union said before coming to power the Modi government, in its election manifesto, had promised that the wages of the Anganwadi workers would be increased.

They said after coming to power the BJP government had decreased the budget of the ICDS scheme, adding that the Aaganwari Insurance Scheme was also stopped in April 2017.
