Jalandhar, January 11

The Agriculture Department has been keeping a close vigil on the northern areas of the district, including Adampur, Bhogpur and Phillaur as crops in these areas are at a risk of getting affected with the yellow rust, following rainfall and harsh cold winds in the region.

Agricultural expert from the city, Naresh Gulati, said weather conditions favourable to the yellow rust have started approaching. Temperatures below 22°C are considered the most favourable in which such air-borne pathogens of yellow rust flourish. It is an infectious disease which spreads through air, water and human contact.

“We have already constituted teams to report us if any sign or symptoms of yellow rust are observed in any part of the district, especially in the vulnerable areas. The teams are also active during holidays,” he said. He said there was no precaution that could be taken for the wheat crop before it gets affected by the disease.

“However, farmers should not worry as proper treatment of the disease is available. Propicona Zole fungicide will be available for the same at agriculture offices in the Jalandhar district,” he added.
