66.71 per cent polling in Nawanshahr

Nawanshahr witnessed a polling percentage of 66.71 during the LS elections conducted today at 592 booths of the district.

In Nawanshahr, 66.66 per cent voters cast their votes, Banga recorded 65.75 per cent polling and Balachaur 67.73 per cent.

The district has noticed much less voting as compared to the previous Lok Sabha elections. In the last Lok Sabha elections, Banga had witnessed 71.64 per cent polling, while in Nawanshahr and Balachaur 73.23 and 69.96 per cent of votes, respectively.

Appreciating the services rendered by the assistant returning officers-cum-SDMs of all three constituencies, besides 2,368 members of 592 polling parties, the Deputy Commissioner congratulated the entire staff for completion of the whole process smoothly and uninterruptedly.

There were 1,554 police personnel led by three SPs and six DSPs to monitor the whole security arrangements. Besides, the 169 sensitive and hypersensitive polling booths were given special attention by the administration and police to avert any untoward incident.

Polling agent dies of heart attack

Balbir Singh (55), a Congress polling agent, today died after suffering a heart attack. He was sitting at a booth in Shahpur Patti when he complained of uneasiness.

As per information, he went back and suffered a heart attack and died. He is survived by three children, all married. One of his sons used to live with him and reportedly he is into farming while his another son and daughter were living abroad.

***Technical glitches

According to some reports, EVMs stopped working at two schools where voting was being held. But after some time, the process resumed after the machines were replaced.
